Area with no Annual survey effort in the dataset analyzed by NOAA NCCOS (Winship et al. 2018). Data analyzed were from the Northwest Atlantic Seabird Catalog (US Fish and Wildlife Service; April 2017) and Eastern Canada Seabirds at Sea database (Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada; February 2017). Mid-points of survey transect segments (~4 km in length) were gridded at a 10 x 10 km resolution, and hatched areas indicate grid cells with no segment mid-points.

Unexploded ordnances (or UXOs/UXBs, sometimes identified as UO) are explosive weapons (bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, land mines, naval mines, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation, potentially many decades after they were used or discarded. While “UXO” is widely and informally used, munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) is the current preferred terminology within the remediation community. This is NOT a complete collection of unexploded ordnances on the seafloor, nor are the locations to be considered exact.

Unexploded Ordnance Locations

Unexploded ordnances (UXO) are explosive weapons (bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, mines, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation. Ocean disposal of munitions was an accepted international practice until 1970, when it was prohibited the Department of Defense. In 1972 Congress also passed the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act banning ocean disposal of munitions and other pollutants. This dataset represents known or possible individual or tightly grouped unexploded ordnances on the ocean floor. This is NOT a complete collection of unexploded ordnances on the seafloor, nor are the locations considered to be accurate. Two related datasets should be viewed in tandem: Unexploded Ordnance Areas displays known or possible former explosive dumping areas and Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) displays areas identified by the United States Army Corps of Engineers where unexploded ordnances may exist.
