Title: Atlantic Shipwreck Database - OCS Lease Block - Density
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
The Atlantic Shipwreck Database (ASD) is a database of shipwrecks within the Atlantic OCS compiled using primary sources, secondary sources, and existing databases. The methods and sources used to compile the ASD are discussed at length within the study report (TRC Environmental Corporation 2012). The ASD includes partial or complete information obtained from such sources as Federal databases (e.g. NOAA’s Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System [AWOIS] and the U.S. Navy’s Non-Submarine Contact List [NSC]); commercial databases (e.g. The Global Maritime Wrecks database, the International Registry of Sunken Ships, and the Northern Shipwrecks database); documents (e.g. U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs Service, and Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation documents); business records (e.g. Lloyd’s Lists); published and manuscript accounts (e.g. from the Boston Public Library and Massachusetts Historical Society); published shipwreck inventories; and State Historic Preservation Offices (TRC Environmental Corporation 2012: 155-64). Overlap among these sources was present and expected; large deviations in location were recorded by the compilers as separate entries but small deviations in location were not added as new entries by the compilers.
Purpose:
This dataset is a density analysis of coordinate locations compiled in the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Atlantic Shipwreck Database (ASD). The ASD is an inventory of federal and private data sources and was developed as part of a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) funded study to inform the Bureau's environmental review of proposed renewable energy development on the Atlantic OCS. This analysis counts the number of coordinate pairs found in the ASD that are located within an OCS Lease Block.

Access_Constraints:
User must assume responsibility to determine the appropriate use of these data. Data should not be used for legally binding applications.
Use_Constraints:
1. The ASD does not represent a complete inventory of shipwrecks on the OCS.Prepared as a tool to assist BOEM in managing information regarding archaeological sites on the OCS, the ASD in no way represents a complete or definitive listing of all known or potential shipwrecks that may be located on the OCS. The research conducted to populate the ASD focused solely on existing and readily available sources of information. This research was not exhaustive of all possible primary or secondary sources that may exist worldwide. Background research alone cannot identify all archaeological sites and this information is not intended to replace the need for survey work conducted by qualified professionals. 2. The source data for the ASD is locationally unreliable. As is often the case when working with historic geographic data, one’s confidence in its ability to impart important information is a function of the source data’s accuracy and reliability. The accuracy of location information is extremely varied in the ASD. The database includes numerous entries based on information from sources that existed prior to the establishment of reliable sources of GPS-field triangulation and almost half of the current entries in the ASD are designated as having unreliable or vague location information (for example, “off the coast of North Carolina”). The density map presented here contains the distribution of all of these sources and does not distinguish between the ranking of location reliability of the source. Therefore, even when considered at the level of individual OCS blocks (an OCS block is a square which measures 4800 meters (m) a side and covers an area of 2304 hectares (ha)), this information should not be interpreted as a complete record of potential archaeological sites within a particular geographic area. The above listed use limitations establish the two major limitations inherent in this data. For these reasons:this information should not be used for decision-making or planning purposes;shipwreck occurrence reported in the source material comprising the ASD and/or in the ASD itself and/or in this density map should not be considered to replace a scientifically-designed survey for the identification of shipwrecks;the information provided in this density map should not be used to suggest or indicate a low probability of shipwreck occurrence within that lease block;the information provided in this density map should not be used to suggest or indicate a high probability of shipwreck occurrence within that lease block;the depiction of an OCS lease block with a density of 0 shipwrecks does not indicate the absence of a shipwreck within that OCS lease block;the depiction of an OCS lease block with a density of 0 shipwrecks should be designated as having “no information"the depiction of this density data should be used only to illustrate the prevalence of shipwrecks on the Atlantic OCS.
