Floating offshore wind is poised to tap into America’s abundant offshore wind resources. While floating wind energy systems have yet to be deployed commercially, the floating offshore wind energy project pipeline is growing rapidly. In fact, the global pipeline for floating offshore wind energy reached 4,888 MW in 2018—and now comprises 38 announced projects, including 46 MW of operating projects. The floating offshore wind energy industry is well into a second-generation, multiturbine, precommercial pilot phase. And, while semisubmersible substructures dominate the market for floating support structures, new hybrid platform technologies are being introduced that could compete in future projects.
