Webinar: Introduction to Floating Offshore Wind

Please join the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Walt Musial, one of the nation’s foremost offshore wind experts, for a webinar offering a basic introduction to floating offshore wind.

Floating offshore wind is poised to tap into America’s abundant offshore wind resources. While floating wind energy systems have yet to be deployed commercially, the floating offshore wind energy project pipeline is growing rapidly. In fact, the global pipeline for floating offshore wind energy reached 4,888 MW in 2018—and now comprises 38 announced projects, including 46 MW of operating projects. The floating offshore wind energy industry is well into a second-generation, multiturbine, precommercial pilot phase. And, while semisubmersible substructures dominate the market for floating support structures, new hybrid platform technologies are being introduced that could compete in future projects.

Designed to help you establish foundational knowledge about the floating offshore wind industry, this webinar will cover the basics of:

  • Resource assessment
  • Global technology trends
  • Economics for U.S. regions where floating systems might be deployed
  • Current types of floating wind platform designs
  • Siting considerations
  • Market status
  • Factors that are driving floating wind development forward.

Who should attend:  Innovators from universities, research institutions, government, regulatory and legislative bodies, NGOs, investment organizations, electric utilities, and other stakeholders.

When: Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, 2-3 p.m. Mountain Time
